CHŌCHIN

(Hanging lantern)

These lanterns became popular during the Edo period (1603-1867). Made of bamboo and covered with washi paper, they were decorated with calligraphy. 

Many Japanese festivals involve decorating shrines and temples with these ancient lanterns. They emit a soft glow, creating a serene atmosphere, making them an integral part of Japanese cultural traditions.
